A Song of Ice and Fire

Any of the seven people that visit /book/ read this series? I'm on book 3 and I gotta say they're pretty addicting. I read books 1 and 2 in about a week each.

Everyone on /book/ reads AsoIaF.  Best fantasy out there.  And you're on the best book in the series.  Hold onto your ass, ass holder.

Too bad we'll have to wait another 10 years for GRRM to finish the last two after Dance comes out.  Fat bastard will probably die before the next one.

I'm so fucking afraid to read those. Back at the days people told me to read the "amazing" fantasy books by Robert Jordan, and they were so horrible I'm still afraid of shitty fantasy sagas. I just can't force myself to try reading the Song of Ice and Fire, because fucking covers look similar, fucking goddamn it. I know it's irrational, but I have an argument supporting my mania here: oftentimes, people that recommend SoIaF ALSO recommend Jordan.

Fucking shit, somebody tell me they are different. Somebody with a clear, rightful distaste to shitty neverending fantasy stories, tell me a Song of Ice and Fire is good.

>>3 I don't think there's any way for two series to be any more different.  I could list their traits down for comparison, but what it boils down to is ASoIaF=WIN / WoT=FAIL.  Ice and Fire is fast, brutal, and beautiful.  The characters are 3 dimentional as fuck, it has some of the most badass moments in fiction, the story is original and nothing like [farmer and princess find wizard to beat dark lord]. I can imagine being burned by the Wheel like that; I read it, but I knew it sucked before I even started, so I didn't expect much.

In IaF, there are no dumb bitchy girls whining and fighting and wasting time.  There are no plot diversions that last for entire useless books.  There is no legion of magic wielding half retarded nuns.  There are no super powered protagonists.  Theres barely any magic at all really.

Im Ser Davos on the other boards btw.  Ive read a lot of fantasy, and very very few authors can compare to GRRM.  Robert Jordan, isn't one of them.  Go read it.

They're fine. You don't need to be in a hurry to read them though, Martin is taking his sweet time writing them.

Thanks, Anons! >>4 , I'm going to go read IaF now quite fearlessly, then! I was thinking of reading it literally for years and was scared that it'd turn out to be something really bad and I'll get to deal with all fans and their lack of taste. God is my witness, I really hate it when something popular with my friends turns out to be shit. Now I'm at least expecting a decent read. AT LEAST. And if it turns out to be a really great book, awwww!

It should. They're unlike anyhting else I've ever read. Conplex, detailed, dramatic... no character is left unfleshed, and no character is safe from death or dismemberment, keeping you on your toes the whole time.

I hated Robert Jordan. I love Song of Ice and Fire. It's better. So there.
