What does /book/ think of it?

I think it's really a profound and great read about adolescence that can be easily related to.

This is on my bookshelf somewhere. Maybe I'll read it next.

I don't understand what people see in it, and I disliked the main character / couldn't relate to him at all. It didn't say anything to me about being a teenager, I just thought it was overwrought and dull.

I find it funny the way so many teens think they're like Holden. He's a fictional character that was designed to relate to teenagers in general, ie. almost everyone feels a connection.

And the only reason you read it is because the school forced you to.

In the right context, it is developmentally appropriate.

Please do not be the thirty something reading it on the train to work.

Personally I thought it was the worst, most overrated book I've ever read.

It's books like that and The Great Gatsby that kids read in high skool and then think "Wow, is that what books are like? That was terrible. I never want to read another book again."

The book also gave me a deeper loathing for the word "phony" than I ever imagined possible.

It's one of those books where you love it or hate it depending on how good your English teacher was. I read it before I had to read it for school, and I love it (I love Salinger in general.)

I read it when I was going into eighth grade. Even then, I saw right through the character's obvious hypocrisy by calling people a "phony" and lying left and right, and hated the shitty prose. J.D. Salinger should at least back up his novel, but the almost cowardly way he refuses to even acknowledge it just pushes my dislike over the "hate" limit.

It is the ultimate book for adolescents.

Holden's a hypocrite? No shit. That's one of the main goddamn points of the book.
