I borrowed this book from the library because I saw that it was one of the most highly-rated books of all time but this shit sucks. It's just small pieces of each soldier's history, random stories popping in and out, and everyone calling each other crazy. I read that it's supposed to be hilarious. Well, it's not funny at all. Small little details about each soldier's life isn't very funny and the story is going no where. The entire backdrop is that there's a war.. but it never goes any futher. There's no progression.

You haven't spent any time in the military. The most hilarious (and frightening) thing about Catch 22 is that while it may have embellished certain ways in which the military is dysfunctional it is, for the most part, absolutely true.

it's ok, you just have no sense of humour. that'll either wear off when you get through puberty and the "macho" phase, or you'll live a sad, sad life, consoled only by toilet humour and race jokes.

So you have to be in the military to find this book funny? Hyuck hyuck. And I'm 23 years old. I think I'm way passed puberty.

You don't have to be in the military, but it certainly helps. And a large number of 4channers never seem to have gotten over puberty.

honestly, if you don't find Catch-22 funny, i can't accept that you are over 14 years old. if you ARE over 14 years old and still think that "this shit sucks", i'm willing to bet your parents used (the simpsons, ren&stimpy, south park, etc.) as a baby-sitter.
Are you trying to draw certain similarities between Catch-22 and YOUR MOM LOLOLOLOLOL?!?!?!?!?

Wow.
I personally believe Catch 22 is an amazing book.
You have to understand the context and the purpose of the book.
It is written out of order, so it takes some piecing together, making it all the better, provokes you to think it through.
Just because it's not a simple, straight-forward read doesn't make it any less worthwhile.

ha, sorry guys but i agree >>1 i mean, yes, i totally understood the book and everything, an aquaintance told me to read it and after i told him that i didnt think it was funny, he instantly thought i was some retard that could never apreciate anything beautiful.
The truth is, he was a pretentious loser. I mean, i get how Yossarians logic at the end (the reasons why he goes back) could seem funny to some people, but to me it just wasnt.
I dont see why some people wont laugh at really stupid shit, just because they think it would make them look dumb, I do it all the time, and my brother always looks at me and says "Thats not funny" and I always tell him to shut the fuck up.

Thank you, some Anonymouse who aren't afraid to voice their opinions. Not everyone will end up liking something and if they didn't, it doesn't mean they're slow or anything. I understood how Catch-22 gives you bits and pieces of the character's lives and how they all connect as you read on. But the book just wasn't all that funny. The characters seemed interested, especially Doc Daneeka or whatever. He was one of the best characters.

I'm about half-way through this book and am really enjoying it. The humor kinda reminds of douglas adams.

Some people just refuse to stick with it don't they?
I appreciate that it can seem disjointed but pay fucking attention. Sometimes it'll click that oh actually didn't that get mentioned before by a different character and... oh, it makes sense!
I think it contains some of the best characters and situations ever published - a particular favourite is Yossarian's 'episode' in Rome. Then he gets to the apartment to find that Aarfy chucked a whore out their window. It's awful but you can't help but laugh, which is one of the essences of the book itself.

It had very few parts that were funny enough to warrant a laugh.

Ok, finished it, and while it was a great ride the ending didn't deliver as much as I had hoped. Still, probally the best book I've read this year.
