Some books use excessive wordiness, go on forever, or use archaic terminology. They may have a plodding pace, with hardly any action between pages, but somehow trudging through them to their last page is an enjoyable test of endurance. What have you enjoyed slogging through?

The Castle by Kafka.
I doubt I'll ever meet someone who didn't absolutely adore Kafka that has read it fully. I'm unsure what he was going for, exactly, but by the time you're done with the book you'll have felt as tried and conspired against as the main character. His endless struggles and meaningless victories and failures seem to carry on through the length and tediousness of the words.
It's a beautiful book and an amazing experience, nonetheless, though it has one of most disappointing endings you'll ever come across. Some of his short stories also have this tendency, though all in different ways, "The Burrow" is one.

I have recently enjoyed reading My Antonia by Willa Cather in the fiction department. The books resemblance to certain harem anime is what got me into it beyond it being a school assignment. Ultimatly the book was beautiful and is a sheer joy to read multiple times.
Guns Germs and Steel by Jaron Diamond is a fantastic book in the non-fiction department. Anyone who enjoys history, this book is a must. Diamond puts into perscpective the very important aspects of prehistory, like agriculture, and shows how they affect the evolution of nations in various parts of the globe over the centuries.

Lots of books when I was studying litterature. Lots of interesting boring stuff. « Topographie idéale pour une agression caractérisée » by Rachid Boudjedra comes to mind. Very hard to read. Mostly boring "story". But really interesting book in itself.
that 2nd chapter in Guns, Germs and Steel is killer, got 2 other friends to read it and they thought the same thing, it just goes on and on. In the end you are glad you read the whole thing when it all comes together but anyone else hit a wall trying to finish chapter 2.
Also Collapse dragged on chapter 2 also, but it mught be me, I have not had anyone else read it yet.

>The Castle by Kafka.
Agreed. One of my favorite books, even though it's a mindfuck to read.
