I have completed the Hitchhiker's series.  Recommend other books that are good.  I've heard that his Dirk Gently series is pretty good, the Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul being the best one.

Let's hear what world4ch has to say

Dirk Gently is a good choice.
I'd also recommend "Starship Titanic"

Other than that, there's not much else Douglas Adams wrote. You might try 'The Salmon of Doubt' if you really like Douglas Adams.

No one ever mentions Last Chance to See when Adams comes up, and that's a shame.  Even if you've never given environmental conservation a thought in your life, it's worth reading.

I've read everything he's written, and I found Last Chance to See to be the only other funny thing he wrote.

I didn't like Dirk Gently at all.

Has anyone seen the advertisement with the picture of Marvin the Paranoid Android from the movie? Doesn't look anything like I imagined him. If you want to see it, go here.

Whoa, someone else has heard of Last Chance to See : p  That's the only Adams book I own that isn't a part of the Hitchhiker's set.  I didn't mention it because I thought it was unknown.  I liked the book very much, it was all about animals you've never heard of, but with descriptions by Adams.  Funny stuff.

Mixed reviews on Dirk Gently.  I heard it the series was less humour, more drama.  I guess I'll have to read it myself to see if I like it.

The new Marvin looks a bit odd... but it beats the outdated look of the old Marvin ^^;;

I dunno.  I thought the old Marvin looked exactly the way you'd expect a clinically depressed robot to look.

Thing is, he shouldn't have been designed to look depressed. The model was supposed to be hip and appealing and whatnot. ("Your plastic pal who's fun to be with!") The depression was just a hilarious flaw in the design. Someone in /w/ compared the new look to an ipod, and that seems strangely appropriate really. Something that's originally stylish and generic, where expressions are then conveyed by the way it moves. (hung head, dragging feet and so on)
Also the "brain the size of a planet" line works a little more literally with the new design...

The Dirk Gently series is very British.  This is speaking as an American.  I loved them as a kid.  Now re-reading them I wonder how in hell I understood some of the obsure references.  Odds are that I didn't, but I honestly cannot remember.  Long Dark Teatime will be less enjoyable unless you already know the basics of Norse mythology.

The Dirk Gently series isn't all that bad, it has its moments. If you end up liking the Dirk Gently series, you might also want to pick up Salmon of Doubt.. I think thats the name, it is a collection of parts of his unfinished work on another gently book.

Awesome show, and the books aren't bad - but:
a) theres only a couple of them
b) probably should watch the show first to get to know the characters

You mean something like:

| He had a narrowing of the coronary arteries which led to a myocardial infarction and a fatal cardiac arrhythmia.

Yes, but why?  You don't just get an infarction for no reason.  Do you?
