Mamoru Oshii : "No one really cares how much we sell. As long as we create things we want, that's what we care about"
unfortunately, not everyone thinks like that in the industry.....

Thomas's response to Bahi
@bahijd I think that's a rather selfish way of thinking.Hits allow the industry to live.Without it investors wouldn't & couldn't take risks.

Bahi's
@Thomasintokyo I agree on that too. But we need both. The real challenge is to achieve both, wich Oshiiさん's first GitS movie accomplished.
But I feel like, these days they don't raise any money for risky projects anymore, but rather for more hits&mainstream.
Yes, it's very challenging but that's good! Let's go through it and do our best!

Bahi confirmed for idiot again.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 5:43

why u no use /a/

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:01

>>209 why? People that want to create something special that they and the people would enjoy are idiots for you?

A risky original project that the audience would like is really difficult but that's what we want. That counts for all aspects of an anime.

Hisashi Mori's design was a big risk for Niji-Iro Hotaru but it was fresh.

Bahi might be a young idiot kid, but at least he is not an ignorant and agrees with Thomas.

Also, Thomas agrees with bahi in a certain manner,  you didn't you post that part.
https://twitter.com/Thomasintokyo/status/293121526612508672

I think they are all going through a very tough phase.
It's good that some animators speak out.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:10

>>211
How did Niji-iro Hotaru perform commercially anyway?

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:18

>>212 It was somewhere in the middle.

It was in the DVD ranking on #25. not top 10
Niji-Iro sold 1,012 copies.

Sword Art Online sold 5,859

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:19

>>213 that's just between one week. not totally.

>>214
Doesn't look too good.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:25

>>215 yup, it's a fail but I enjoyed it a lot.

Typically the only anime films to really achieve great Japanese box office success are mainstream accessible pictures like Ghibli films and children’s anime, and features specifically targeted at established fan bases.

Ghost in the Shell and Akira are very rare exceptions, projects like that usually can't suck anyones dick and that's why they never get made.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:25

Eh, it's not like animators have to sell the product. They usually get to do what they love, although some are pickier than others when it comes to choosing projects.

Also, Yamakan's words:

Right now, Brand power is more important than quality. Evangelion, Gundam, and Studio Ghibli manage to maintain their brand power somehow. However, I think those brands will disappear someday.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:26

>>216 the latest Ghibli films suck arse though.
Specially Goro's films, great sakuga as always but arse story.

I'm looking to Miyazaki and Takahata's new films!

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:28

>>218 > *looking forward to
sorry I had to do it.

>>217 I think Yamakan is jealous.
When they disappear, what's going to show up then?

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:30

>>219

Hosoda.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:31

In my personal opinion, it is impossible to have success with the same concept as Akira again. Those times are done.

We need something totally fresh and not a "Redline" that orients itself to the 80s and early 90s.

Anyway this is a sakuga thread, I'm here for the animations!

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:33

>>220 Hosoda is no challenge for Miyazaki.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 6:35

>>219

I actually did find that statement weird. Most of the stuff he works on are still targeted at the niche otaku audience but they generally maintain above average quality compared to other stuff airing at the time. Of course, I'm talking mainly about the production values rather than actual content.

He probably just wants to make it big someday like the rest of them.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 7:02

People forget that the mind set of the 80s in Japan was the reason why the shit hit the fan in the 90s and the economy bubble.

It's stupid to want the money of other people without reward.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 7:07

>>217

well, interesting that original anime projects are pretty succesful after all. If you compare the sales lists of the last years, even if you exclude Madoka as exception of the rule.

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 7:29

baji plz go

Name: Anonymous 2013-01-21 8:17

It's over anime is finished.
Enjoy your souless idol moeshit shows from now on because animators obviously hate working on them.

I just followed the mecha designer of Gurren Lagan. He told me that he was watching Oban star-racers and liked it a lot. Thank you Twitter!!

Looks interesting, I would like to see Pixar try that out in full colour next time. It still looks like CGI, but with hints of that hand-drawn aesthetic.
