Well...
Japanese call their comics manga, right?
We westerners simply imported this word out of laziness or just because it's something that simply needed to be called something else at the time.
Otaku means nerd in Japanese. The word have homever garned a negative ring to it since some there will always be the obsessive and extreme ones, who sometimes act out their fantasies and cause media chaos and much controversy. In recent times more so since the moé boom. Many Otaku are shut ins.
I don't think most people calling themselves Otaku have any idea what it means outside of the "obsession" with anime.

"when the cicada barks" and "school days" became a broadcasting stop.
The original defination for Otaku is someone who extremely obsess with something, today the term is most likely refer to Anime/Manga/Game dedicated fans. I dont find the word 'Otaku" offensive (at least not me).
As for nerds its just means "American" version of Otaku, or someone sorta like "indoor guy"

It depends on the situation, and I learnt this the hard way.
I once mocked a badly dressed Cloud and then he kinda chase me around with a huge plastic sword yelling "Omnislash" or some other crap. Damn it was embarassing... =_=

im gonna be honest and say what I think.
I have never fit into a group no mater how hard i tried. I allways seemed to be an outcast.when i fist heard the word otaku i heard it defined as"a person who likes anime and manga" (and i was allready obsessed) which i now know to be completely false. but then because of it i felt like i belonged in the group and it made me happy.
this was years ago but now as the definition for me becomes more like me I became spitefull of the word. whenever i hear otaku all I can think of it how im a fucking loli pedo and i will never find happyness outside of my animation.
but then theres the fact that im american. according to 4chan we dont have the materials and social stress that the japanese have that causes otaku. plus i still try my best to be a socialy normal person(sometimes).
this word kills me because i dont know if i like it or hate it If i am or If i am not. the word is kinda static aswell. theres the well to do genshiken people and the fucked up hikkikomori people so how do I know which is really otaku and which isnt?
but even the japanese people see the word otaku like americans see the word nerd. there are the trekkies who go out drink and party and there are the uber nerds who sit inside all day trying to compre star wars to star treck.
I really want to know where I am on the list. people have yelled at me at the arcade for loving moe and Ive had japanese people say otaku are not in existance outside of japan. theres rumors about me being a pedophile at my school(college) but the there are people who talk to me to be nice.
how do I know what I am. I want to have a word to describe myself but at the sametime I wish i didnt need one. otaku is closer to anything else that I am really but does that really make me one. I cant be Im white american but im soo dedicated to this genre of animation its become my life.
this is soo pointless for me to type on tis thing like its my damn journal. WTF im clicking reply!

Ya know, ironically in Japan itself Otaku is a term for nerd with no life. In America, it is a person with a profound loving of anime/video games.
I proudly wear that title with either definition.

No, no and no. Rape her instead. That's what real otakus do.
Bullshit (often bowdlerized to BS), also Bullcrap, is a common English expletive. It can also be shortened to just "Bull".
Most commonly, it describes incorrect, misleading, false language and statements. Literally, it describes the feces of a bull. As with many expletives, it can be used as an interjection (or in many other parts of speech) and can carry a wide variety of meanings.
Bullshitting is usually when one makes statements that are false, or made-up. Usually people describe other people's action of making a lot of statements as bullshitting in arguments, when one is making up rules or making examples that are not anything to do with what they are discussing or when one is making statements by using examples that need different rules to be applied, so this person is bullshitting
As it contains the word "shit", the term is sometimes considered foul language, hence the use of the euphemistic abbreviations "bull" and "BS". Nonetheless, the term is prevalent in American English and, as with many words, the term is used in a variety of countries, some dating back to approximately the same era World War I. In British English, bollocks is a comparable expletive, although bullshit is now a commonly used expletive in British English also.

Tell me this: How many Anime-figures is minimum requirement to be called Otaku?
Otaku is nerd in japanese.
The reason they call you that is because they're faggots.

Otaku is a derogatory term in Japan. I always lol when teenage forumfaggots say "0mg im liek sooo otaku ^______^". They're basically calling themselves pathetic nerds with no life and a burden on society. And shit, if you're going to call yourself otaku for e-penis or acceptance or whatever, make sure you're not a narutard faggot who has only watched like 5 shows.
As for me, I would call myself otaku. I have no friends and am an anime expert (seen 452+ shows completely, last completed: Seto no Hanayome).
