It's popular with pretentious weeaboos because it pretends there's some really deep stuff hidden behind all the layers of unfunny and boring filler.

Should it ever become as popular as Eva, watch the waps suddenly claiming it sucks and always sucked.

Eva isn't that bad actually.  The last two episodes are though, never have I seen anything that boring.  I love the mechanical animations, I especially remember one where some building or something rose from the ground and the camera was really close.  Man, I almost came.
