Honey and Clover

Shot in the dark but anyone else following this series?

I didn't bother with any of the shows this year but there was a Honey and Clover wallpaper thread on 4ch and the art caught my eye.  Interested me enough to grab an episode and have enjoyed what I've seen of it since.

In a way, it feels like a Genshikan of the drama genre, in that light hearted self-parodying way.  The love story is pretty much light shoujo fair but the comedy itself tends to be more clean-cut shounen/otaku style than shoujo.  (All relatively speaking of course).  The art is pretty up there too, very nice and soft palette.

I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoyed Marimite and wouldn't mind a much less serious drama series.  I hesitate to categorise this series as shoujo though, it seems more like a light-shoujo series made for guys.

I know what you mean about classifying it as shouojo.  Irregardlessly, it's a fantastic drama/romance/comedy, and anyone who likes shoujo should watch it.  A lot of people I know, including myself, kind of got bored around 5 eps in and stopped watching - resist that temptation and keep watching it.  You won't regret it.

Incidentally, the anime follows the manga very closely.  Of the first five volumes, all but a handful of chapters were followed panel by panel in the anime.  But the manga is hardcore shoujo style though compared with the anime.

And goddamnit, if crap like Yakitate can make it to 30+ episodes, Honey and Clover should too.

I wasn't considering this show at all, but decided to try it after seeing reviews on blogs and screenshots of the alternating styles in comedic and dramatic moments. I'm completely hooked now. The characters are what did it for me, they feel alive. The romance/drama and comedy are perfectly balanced. The poignant moments are honest without feeling too schmaltzy.

Saw the first episode and it was quite alright. Should I keep watching?

If you liked what you saw in the first episode, yes.  Only nineteen episodes out thus far though.

I read the manga, it was funny & interesting, but I'm also curious to watch the anime.
A friend keeps trying to persuade me to watch it.
What's your impression after watching it? I'm curious. If many people really enthushiast with this show, then I might give it a try.

H&C seems, to me, a case of shoujo manga animated by a guy and slightly de-girlied to get guys to watch it. as the manliest man ever to live short of kenshiro, i can say it has been a success

It was printed in a shoujo magazine and as a poster commented the manga is shoujo-style artwork.  Nonetheless the story is told through a male lead character which makes it feel less girly.  Anyone who likes drama-romance anime (ie. Kare Kano) should enjoy Honey & Clover.  Sadly I dont think the story will go past 1 season but im hoping it will.

I think you summed it up nicely.  Sort of like, succeeding where Onegai Twins failed.

I dunno, I didn't really find it to be that much of a break from shoujo in terms of humor. There are a lot of shows for girls that use that sort of slapstick pacing, like Fruits Basket, for example. Gakuen Alice and Kodocha are like that as well. Granted, those shows are kind of the exception rather than the rule, but still...

dude, "irregardless" isn't a word. It's a comedy psuedointellectual term made up by a bunch of yahoos in the 1920s.

The show is introduced with a mail lead, but the two women in the show really serve as more of a focal point for the plot.

I'm glad you got the joke.  Note that "irregardlessly" works even better :P

I saw the first three eps at Otakon and liked it a lot.  Reminds me what Here is Greenwood might have been like as a TV series.

I wished the show would focused on Hagu and Yamada more.  As of episode 22, it's still about Takemoto and frankly, it's pretty boring.  Need more of that Rika-Yamada love triangle action.

H&C ending ruined by Takemoto arc. Boo.

Don't change these.
