Quakelive rant

Name: VIPPER 2010-04-21 9:53

I posted something similar in another thread recently, but without the same conclusion. I need to preface this by saying that I have enjoyed id's games for easily over a decade, and I have hundreds of hours of QL play time. Quake III was one of the best multiplayer experiences of all time as far as I'm concerned and QL to a lesser extent is just as good... However, I am frustrated and easily annoyed by id's half-assed work-product as of late. I also understand that a lot of people in Europe play this game so dropping QL would affect them too. However, we're all playing the same game and the lack of good updates affects them too....

The 'rant': I sure am glad that the developers at id are spending copious amounts of time on addressing actual game play issues. Oh wait, nevermind, who needs to do that when we have zero gravity and 16 man clan arena. It's funny that they won't just come out and admit what everyone, including id, knows: QL as a project, game, whatever is a lost cause. I think the project was started to see the feasibility (and potential profitability) of browser-based gaming. Okay, we've seen it. It can be done at a loss to the company provided that it's based on 10 year old technology. id should really just bite the bullet and pull the plug on this project if they don't intend to properly maintain it. Hell, nowadays if people don't play first person shooters on Xbox 360 or PS3, then on the PC they are increasingly playing things like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (which arguably has received fairly useful updates in its short life span), and crappy tactical shooters in general. There still is little time to perhaps extend the life support on id's distinct, fast-paced shooters like QL, but only if actual changes are made. If id does not intend to make the changes, CANCEL THE PROJECT. I personally am tired of logging onto QL and seeing nothing in terms of actual progress. Frankly, I don't give a **** about low gravity clan arena. Make real changes and new maps for 1v1, TDM, CA, CTF. Don't insult the community by adding bloom commands and increasing server spots and passing that off as an update.

The bottom line is: unfortunately for the handful of people who actually play QL and enjoy it, the project should be indefinitely shelved if the best that id can do is provide an "update" over a period of two months that does nothing except increase the slots of clan arena servers--and as of tonight--adds low gravity to clan arena. There have been no substantive changes in any other game types including CA. Just save yourself the money on this project, id, and pull the plug if you're too lazy or don't have the resources to deliver. I know I've said this a few times already but it bears unlimited repeating... I guess the bright side would be that if the project is axed, at least people who still want to play Quake can go back to Q3 where community developers actually make changes to the game.
