In the given context, "islamophobia" means "irrational hatred, discrimination and stereotyping against Muslims", just like xenophobia doesn't literally denote fear of foreigners.

And I'm sorry you can't discern cause from effect. The cartoon incident isn't an isolated event illustrating the general lack of rationality among Muslims, it's a sign of anti-western/capitalist political organization around those cultural values that haven't been destroyed by capitalist media.
