I was driving home from work this evening along Mounts Bay Road in Perth, and has the misfortune to experience one of those asshole drivers who really shouldn't be on the roads.
Here's what happened:
I turned right out of Hackett Drive onto Mounts Bay Road, Right hand lane, behind an Silver EB Fairmont. Fairmont driver is doing less than 50km/h, so I do my usual "If I give him enough room, he'll merge left and do the right thing." So I give him 3 carlengths of space, and wait for him to move over.
Waiting, waiting... 1.5 - 2kms later, plenty of opportunities, and he still hasn't. So I indicate out left to get into the other lane, and as I do so he snaps on his indicator and swerves into the left hand lane in front of me. 50km/h.
We then get to just past the Brewery, and I move over into the right hand lane. He does the same, and I'm thinking "Uh-huh". We continue along to where the road splits into 2 lanes to go through the roundabout under the Narrows, and he's driving in the middle of both fucking lanes, waiting for me to choose one.
I go right, he swerves right.
So by now I'm starting to get a little annoyed, and wish I left the office 5 mins earlier. I'm also no longer feeling like giving the guy any further amusement, and decide to get past. Through the roundabout, indicate left, I get into the other land and accelerate to pass. He almost takes off my front bumper in an effort to get in front of me, and then brakes hard (with no cars in front) to slow us down to 20km/h. And he turns around, while driving, looks me in the eye and laughs.
It continued like this all the way over the Narrows, until I turned on to Labouchre Road in South Perth and lost him.
It's drivers like this that do my head in. Genuine, certified assholes that appear to have nothing better to do then get behind the wheel of what could be considered a lethal weapon, and head out to find some poor schmuck to terrorise on the roads. To them, it's just a sport - they don't give a toss that when they swerve, they could cause an accident that costs someone their life, or at least a huge chunk of cash to get a car back on the road.
It's drivers like this that need to be taken out back, beaten with a blunt object, and then have their licenses permanantly revoked. Only then will we see the demise of road rage, and maybe a dent in the road toll.
Anyone got any similar experiences to share, or thoughts on what they'd do in this situation?
-A.
EDIT: And no, I don't drive a ricewagon, so it can't have been a test of male egos
