Needle-swallowing fraudster busted tainting supermarket sushi
SAYAMA, Saitama -- A man who swallowed needles he inserted into food he had bought at a supermarket in an apparent attempt to extort money from the store has been arrested, police said.
Kyosuke Miyasako, 43, an unemployed man from Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, has been accused of obstructing operations at a Seiyu supermarket in Sayama.
Officers suspect that Miyasako intended to force the supermarket into paying him money after swallowing the needles.
"I was after money," officers quoted Miyasako as saying.
Miyasako visited Seiyu's Sayama outlet on Feb. 21, where he inserted two 2-centimeter-long needles into a sushi package.
At home he inserted four similar needles into two pieces of fried chicken he bought at the supermarket before eating them.
That same evening, Miyasako told the supermarket that the fried chicken he had bought contained needles.
Police started investigations after an X-ray detected the needles.
