Thief arrested after returning 34 million yen to bank

SAITAMA -- A middle-aged man who stole a bag containing 45 million yen from a cash security van has been arrested after he returned the bag with most of the money to the bank's ATM booth, police said.

Teruo Miyazaki, an unemployed man, stole the bag from a cash delivery van at a parking lot near a Saitama Resona Bank ATM booth in Ageo on Dec. 6 while guards were away from the vehicle.

Miyazaki, 47, who was an employee of the security firm, returned 34 million yen on Dec. 17, placing the bag next to an ATM machine.

Another 10 million yen was later found in a forest in Kitamoto, Saitama Prefecture.

The whereabouts of the remaining 1 million yen is unknown, police said.

Officers suspect Miyazaki used a duplicate key to gain entry to the van. He went missing in late December, but was arrested on Thursday after a hospital examined him after he complained of hunger in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, the officers said. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Jan. 21, 2005)

$37.50 = ¥102.91 (2005:01:24, Tokyo)
