Thoughts on roles of filmmakers.

The hierarchical list of film roles:

1. The Philosopher Technicians
These include the Writer and Cinematographer. They establish themes, structure, allegories, allusions, metaphors, etc.; in short they are the practiced thinkers.

2. The Social Technicians
These include the Director, Producers, Marketers, Script editors, Production assistants, etc. They make possible that which to the thinkers is out of reach; in short they divide and handle the labor that goes into the film and it financial success.

3. The Raw Technicians
These naturally include the actors, gaffers, best boys, electricians, re-recordists, etc. They provide the elements presenting and effectuating the shot as dictated by the Philosopher Technicians and the Social Technicians.

4. The Subordinate Hybrids
Set designers, Film editors, Foley artists, Costume designers, Composers, etc.; Their work — while establishing necessary thematic elements giving the film an authenticity and congruity — are themselves subjugated by the aim and labors of the Cinematographer, Writer, Director, Producers, etc.

5. The Support
Caterers, Security, Drug dealers, Assistants, etc.

---

This seems incomplete and narrow and would like more opinions.

As an asides this formula if correct on any level for one movie will not necessarily be correct for another.

It looks like you got all of them. I'm assuming that the "Support" is the marketing team.
If no one is brainwashed into seeing these films by excessive commercial breaks, they'd never watch this shit that they smear on the screens. Also fewer fatalities would happen in Colorado because there would be no one for the insane to shoot at.

No, just no.

Cinematographers are glorified camera men/gaffers. They mostly work with lighting.

You're partly right on the first though you missed out on the fact that it's the Director who puts in and establishes themes, structures, etc, etc. That majority of hollywood writers write tech. scripts which don't even include camera notes. I believe it's considered extremely arrogant for a writer to put that stuff. Actors are also VERY important, they are not just trained to perform like monkeys or puppets. They are responsible for knowing what the director wants out of them, but the director doesn't act for them. Describing them as "raw technicians" is simply ignorant.

You should look into what they call in the industry "above the line" and "below the line" positions. You come off as not even knowing anything about the industry. Note that the biggest creative head(s) are the PRODUCERS. They put the money, and its THEIR decision that is final.

You also completely missed out a very important position: The Art Director. Art directors aren't set designers, set designers design the sets based on the Art Director's requests who closely works with the Director to establish the look of the film.

Also, you can't lump "assistants" in support. There is a bif difference between an Assistant Director, Camera Assistant, and what you probably mean, Actor Assistant. Assistant Directors are basically subordinate directors below the line, but are just as important and along with the unit production manager are the two highest positions in the technical roles.

Don't change these.
