This episode was odd. Its main feature was how The Ponds were torn between everyday normal life, and travelling with The Doctor, but it also lacked structure, as if the writer was just doodling around as he wrote this episode. There were inconsistencies, but there was mostly no consistency to begin with. The introduced enemy talked about the human race being a disease. That is a good theme, that the episode could have done something with instead of just giving it as an unreasonable reason at the end. Instead we get mysterious cubes that just lies around for over 300 days, more "reality TV" with Amy and Rory, the huge Tardis parked in their living room, before anything really happens.
The Doctor starts of with declaring how the cubes are perfectly identical, "Not a single molecule difference between them.", and I sort of buy that, because he has only studied their surfaces, and because we're probably talking Timelord level of technology here, but neither he nor the combined labs on Earth, has a spectrometer or an X-ray machine powerful or advanced enough to establish what's inside them or WHAT sort of molecules that The Doctor was referring to being so identical. If you want something to sound over the heads of the audience, you talk about tachyon fields, not simple molecules which most people can understand.
The team concludes that the cubes want to be observed, so they go about observing the cubes for days without noticing anything. Then The Doctor does the reasonable thing, and takes his time-machine to go... ...somewhere? See, he could have easily gone into the future to see if anything would happen with the cubes there, or if anybody has observed the cubes enough to discover anything, but instead he just goes away for awhile while monitoring the news feeds of the *present* day.
Rory protested that they can't just venture off in the Tardis with The Doctor, because he/they would late for work. This is absolute bullshit. What part of "time-machine" keeps escaping this series? Oh, but it DOESN'T escape the series, because a moment later, The Doctor treats them to a time-travel, saying that nobody will notice any time passing before they're back. The ass-pull Tardis is the reason why I hate this series.
Apparently The Doctor is staying 300 days more at the Ponds, with his giant Tardis parked in the middle of their living room. This is when the cubes spring to life, doing random stuff. This is when the episode actually gets going, about half-way through.
The Doctor regreted that he didn't collect and burn the cubes. The military was already doing their best collecting the cubes, and they were all proven to be indestructible, so that was a stupid thing to say.
A girl robot is introduced, briefly explained, neutralized, and never seen from again. She was probably an idea that was invented and then scrapped again. She wasn't even important in the plot - just one of what must be many drones, that sat around and watched things in the waiting rooms of hospitals.
After an encounter with the new Shakri race, the solution to it all is to defilibrate every human back to life, who has been dead for several minutes, using the same pulse. That would work if the human heart worked like a car battery, and defibrilation wasn't just a stab in the dark. Then the ship explodes, apparently from the energy drain.
This episode wasn't horrible by Who standards, but it was like looking at a jigsaw where none of the pieces fit. It had its moments, but these moments felt like just another dart thrown at a dart board. Also, if Amy and Rory is going to turn into some kind of reality TV side-show, then I can't wait for their companionship to end.
