DVD player stuff here! help!

I have a DVD player built into my television. When I press pause or stop a DVD that I'm wathching, i can turn off the television and when I turn the TV back on, the movie will resume where I left off.
Other DVD players that I own (two standalone players and my Xbox) don't do this. When I turn off the power the disc starts over from the beginning and when I press stop or pause, the disc keeps spinning, the machine keeps running, and I'm always afraid that the motor will wear out or it will overheat and damage the disc, which has happened to me before. I used to have a high end Sony DVD player, that I would leave on pause over night or for days at a time and when I came back once it was totally ruined.
I can turn off my TV for weeks, the disc stops spinning so I don't have to worry about damaging it and when I turn it back on it resumes its position. The problem is that its a really lousy DVD player and can't handle Superbit DVDs and sometimes just won't play other types of disc.

tl;dr
Does this particular feature of being turned off completely and then resuming its position have a name that I should look for when I buy my next standalone DVD player, or is this something that a DVD player just may or may not have?
