Michael Richards, better known to the American public as Kramer from the sitcom Seinfeld was found dead this morning in his Los Angeles hotel room, the result of an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was 57 years old.
Police have not yet commented on his death, but it is thought that it was a suicide. Powell Hernanda, the chambermaid who found his body commented to the press, “It was about 10:00 am, and I was cleaning the rooms, like I always do. I went into Kramer’s room and there’s this terrible smell coming from the bedroom. Terrible smells and hotel rooms are pretty common combinations, but when I opened the bedroom there was a body lying on the floor in a pool of blood. I knew it was Kramer because he had that crazy hair, his face, though, was impossible to see because it was basically gone.”
Many in the press speculate that the suicide is fallout from the recent Los Angeles nightclub incident in which Richard’s “lost it” and began shouting racially charged insults at a native-American heckler. The video of that performance spread across the Internet like wildfire, leading to widespread condemnation from all corners of the media. Richards issued a public apology a few days later on the David Letterman show. The apology was widely derided as incoherent, scapegoatist, and cowardly. Riley Gifford a commentator from the Black Entertainment Television network commented that Richard’s apology, “Lacked coherency, and blamed the American nation and Hurricane Katrina.” Further, “I doubt the authenticity of his apology, it smacks of damage control. If he was really sincere about it he would have appeared on BET.”
