V for Vendetta

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-27 23:15

So what's with the Wachoski's brother's new film and what are they trying to say? Terrorism is cool? It's always good to steal from 1984? I like Batman TAS? What?

V for Vendetta is another comic book-turned-movie. Originally written by Alan Moore, who's been getting a lot of hollywood attention recently. "League of Extraordinary Gentelemen" and "From Hell" are both his. He also created the John Constantine character- yep, which Keanu Reeves played in 2004's "Constantine".
Somehow, I'm reminded of the time that the Wachosiki's were accused of stealing the Matrix plot from another comic, the Invisibles. Oddly enough, The Invisibles and V for Vendetta are from the same publisher, Vertigo Comics...

Not trying to be a Comic Book Guy, but V for Vendetta was made before Vertigo ever existed. It's all under DC comics so it's almost the same, but with a slight difference that I annoyingly have to point out.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-06 15:47

The comic itself had like 25% action and rest was dialouge, of course the action scenes were pretty awesome

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-09 6:53

V for Vendetta FTW i'm looking forward to it

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-09 8:37

The movie will probably suck (Alan Moore removed himself from the credits. Guess why)
But the comic is made of win and god

Alan Moore has said that he considers films in general an inferior medium. Dude is a genius writer, but I wouldn't take his word on a movie (even if it is an adaptation of his works) as granted.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-17 17:59

I didn't fully understand this film.

Why was Evie tortured? What did that accomplish? If it's supposed to densensitize her to fear, then does she really want to 'not feel anything' afterwards?

To me, V seemed just as bad as anyone else; to fulfill his vendetta he'd kill and use whomever necessary. Evie seemed like part of that, though I did get why he didn't go through with blowing up the Old Bailey at the end, with his own personal mission completed.

I also didn't like the pro-gay agenda, but I know one of those Wachowski's is a turd smuggler.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-18 2:38

He's supposed to be a morally ambiguous character, but the film definitely made a good guy vs bad guy distinction.  The film also had propaganda of its own, but looking past that, it was a much better adaptation than previous films based on Moore.  They did what they could to flesh out details, give background where there wasn't any, and add length to the plot which was somewhat short.  But there was something uneven about the tone of the movie that I can't quite put my finger on.

What Moore found most laughable however were the details. "They don't know what British people have for breakfast, they couldn't be bothered. 'Eggy in a basket' apparently. Now the US have 'eggs in a basket,' whish is fried bread with a fried egg in a hole in the middle. I guess they thought we must eat that as well, and thought 'eggy in a basket' was a quaint and Olde Worlde version. And they decided that the British postal service is called Fedco. They'll have thought something like, 'well, what's a British version of FedEx... how about FedCo? A friend of mine had to point out to them that the Fed, in FedEx comes from 'Federal Express.' America is a federal republic, Britain is not."

It's an incredible movie, fuck those nerdy critiques no one gives a shit about. Yeah, my experience was lessened because Evey didn't use the correct terminology when she talked about her fucking eggs, and because V's bootlaces weren't the right hue of black.

Alan Moore is an asshole. Everyone knows this, even the artist of Vendetta. When Hollywood does bad we say "oh look Hollywood is doing bad again, shame on you Hollywood" and when Hollywood does better we say "HOLLYWOOD SHOULD BE DOING BETTER THAN THIS FOR SHAME"

Vendetta wipes the floor with the trash that has been released for the past 5 years. Forget the comics, forget Matrix, forget 1984. Just watch the movie and enjoy it, there are so few out there that allow you to do this.

This movie was the greatest movie I have ever seen in my entire life, next to the Matrix trilogy.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-20 22:57

What I liked the most was that they don't use super obvious computer graphics except for last fight scene, and it was incredibly tastefully done.

It's nice to see the Matrix guys can do a 'by the book' movie that doesn't use special effects like a crutch (or at least in the obvious way it wa in Matrix, I'm sure V had plenty of green-screen footage for little things you wouldn't notice)

Matrix II & III suck.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-23 3:49

>>15 Matrix II & III are decent sci-fi action flicks weighed down by tons of pretentious and incoherent fluff. Also, what the fuck I am doing posting this shit in this thread?

Fixed.

I was expecting "Matrix with British people", but fortunately that was not the case. Good movie, and a good adaptation of the comic.

I must say I loved this movie saw Ultraviolet before it Ultraviolet sucked ass dont waste money on that movie I had not expected V for Vendetta to be as good as it was it was freaking awesome. That is all.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-24 16:45

Ultraviolet had 30 minutes of backstory cut out by the producers, so wait for the DVD.

Nice! The only decent scenes from that movie was her versus the vampire yakuza and then the fire blade fight scene. Can't wait 2 c V.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-25 21:08

V was very viewtiful.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-28 16:56

This film has reminded me how i felt 15yrs ago when i read it. Only now i am more scared of the UK government than i was.
Yes it is 1984 but less bleak, and the matrix was a wasted opportunity ( maybe the studio had influence ). England is a scary place to live.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-28 17:03

I wish it was as ambiguous as the graphic novel, because it lets you fill in certain details.  Even though the original nuclear war premise was flawed due to the land being uninhabitable afterwards, it could have been a neutron bomb instead.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-31 23:17

It was cool except for the 30 minutes of gay cowboys eating yogurt.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-04 8:49

it's an alright movie, nothing special but watchable. The funniest scenes are V in his cooking outfit, and Portman in the red-riding-hood dress. It's some pretty crude propaganda to fuel the conspiracy theories around 9/11 and argues for violent terrorism.

The last fight scene was actually the worst part of the movie. It's basically the same bullet-time bullshit that was cool once, and only once. The weapon trails were dumb.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-15 15:23

The best part of the movie imho is when Evie (sp?) got her head shaven and tortured with concentrated blasts of water. The best parts are the quietest actually. I found the letter the lesbian wrote which was found by Evie, to be beautiful.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-17 19:14

When she talks about the very last inch does she mean the space in her vagina?

i got this message from the movie- 'terrorism can be a good thing just open your minds.'

lol. if only that were the case. i wanna be a terrorist

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-18 14:43

Only nuclear terrorism can solve our problems.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-20 19:34

Moral Ambiguity DID happen in this Movie, V has an agenda which was arguably freedom-pursuing and righteous, while using completely evil means to acheive his ends. The whole move was good, especially as the age of The Republican States of America is nigh.

Honestly, V is the first movie since the original Matrix that made me doubt my status-quo on reality.

The knife trails were not dumb, th Wachowskis refused to use their "Gimmick Shot" from matrix so NO BULLET TIME HAPPENED in V. Everything about this movie is great, only fearful republican conservative crap-flingers will dislike this film.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-21 0:20

It is unfortunate that you find this thought provoking.  It means there is a serious lack of thought provoking movies.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-22 0:06

Isn't there?? I wonder what other movie has er.. provoked any thought at all

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-25 23:57

The pacing was bullshit.
The final fight was corny.
The bad guys were lame.
None of the characters had depth. This goes especially for the bad guys.
A corny, unsubtle political message.

If you disagree with me on any of these points you are a faggot. Truth.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-25 23:58

Oh, and by the way, I'm about as liberal as it gets.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-26 1:06 (sage)

This is big budget hollywood we're talking about here, not some independent art house film.

V is not for Vendetta... V is for VIPSTAR!

Oh yeah, because the only reason to use large words is to show the world how intelligent you are, not because that word happens to be the best word to describe your thoughts. Perhaps Wallsy should have said "occlude", or is that still too intellectual. Regardless, on the basic premise Wallsy is correct. You either believe or your don't believe. If you're "open to the possibility of there being a higher power" then you aren't a "believer". Agnosticism is just a form of atheism. While it's true that Atheos meant "godless" in the original Greek and implied a more active disbelief in the gods, the modern English word can mean either abject disbelief or simply a lack of belief. Ergo, unless you are a believer, you can be called an atheist. As he said, one is simply a lack of the other.
