Why is Oldboy getting such good reviews?

Name: Anonymous 2006-01-30 23:13

I was talking about good movies with friends a week or two ago and one of them mentioned OLDBOY. It's been getting rave reviews even from people like Roger Ebert! I was skeptical about this movie at first, but with Ebert giving it 4/5 stars, I decided to try it out.

The main thing people were raving about was the ending to the movie. Some secret unexpected twist that would blow you away.

It started off not too bad. Some guy gets locked up and he doesn't know why. He is later released and is told he has a certain amount of time to find out why he was imprisoned and who did it.

The movie was the biggest fucking turd I had ever seen in my entire life. The violence was unnecessary and without purpose, the dialogue is shoddy, the fight scenes aren't believable and seem gratuitous, the storyline runs at an offbeat pace riddled with plot holes and random nonsensical events, and the final twist, the one I waited through 2 hours of shit for, was the stupidest fucking thing ever. If any of you remember how retarded the twist to Star Ocean: Til the End of Time was, well, this one takes the cake, eats it, shits it out, eats it again, shits it out again, and has sex with the shit.

I don't understand why this movie got praise from people like Quentin Tarantino and Roger Ebert. Someone must have payed them a fortune to get them to spew such filthy filthy lies about the movie.

If anyone else has seen it, please post you're opinions. Is it the greatest thing EVAR? Is it a dog turd? What do you think?

You need to see it again to understand everything.

When he's locked up in the room, look at the bottom of the bed when the gas is pumped in. Later, watch for the guy standing behind him when he is at the restaurant after being released. Notice something familiar?

Fucking freaky, and it makes the ending seem 1000 times creepier!

When you watch a movie, having high hopes just ruins it so...Oldboy is THE shite.

Oldboy is getting good reviews because it's an amazing film from one of the world's best directors.  That said, it is a difficult film, both in terms of content and narrative.  Quentin Tarantino and Roger Ebert like it because they are sophisticated film viewers for whom these difficulties are trivial.  You seem to dislike it because you found those difficulties too severe.  Maybe one day you will also find them trivial, and then you will understand why they speak so highly of Oldboy.  In the meantime, perhaps you should pay more attention to the actual reviews that Ebert writes instead of just looking at the star rating, which, incidentally goes from zero to four stars, not five.  (Oldboy received four stars.)

You asked why they liked it and I told you why.  Do you actually think I was wrong in my answer as to why they liked it?  Do you not concede that they might have a different approach to viewing films than you, one in which Oldboy is interesting?

Anyway, what made you think you would like it?  Do you often agree with Roger Ebert and Quentin Tarntino's taste in films?  Did you even read Roger Ebert's review of the film?  He addresses every objection you make right there!

And anyway, this is real intellecutal elitism, not the pseudo-kind.  If you're too fucking retarded to appreciate the fact that some people know more about film than others, than you deserve to have horrible experiences watching movies.
