It's pretty typical of a Hollywood film today for nearly every dramatic second(not just a pause) to contain some snippet of soundtrack implying mood, rising and falling with every little incident. I've gotten to thinking lately that this is overdoing it; I like the asthetics commonly used in films from the 70s and before where a lot of scenes are nearly silent, or the only sounds to follow are from the actors.
I don't really mean that film scores should be thrown out, though; they can work effectively, it's just that in recent years they seem to be overstaturated and insulting to the audience.

I'd like them to be more memorable like RPGs. A lot of scores barely qualify as music, more like sound effects. The Matrix used plenty of harsh sounding instruments to convey danger, but I felt a techno theme for each character would have worked better.
I was dissapointed in Attack of the Clones as the music was far too subdued. Hardly any themes shown out compared to the other movies.
LOTR style would be great. The Spirits Within used no memorable music or themes, compared to the games that have excellent character and event music.
I dislike instruments used like a sound effect that signals danger, alertness, tension, suddeness, etc. Actual, real music works fine. Unless it's by a contemporary band that's trying to sell soundtrack CDs, like American Pie.

Scary movies cease to be scary when the music pretty much tells you when things are going to happen. Add in a horrible plot and predictable points and you've ruined yourself a good scary movie. But even in the lamest/greatest of those movies, the scariest momments i've ever experienced where when no music was present to suggest anything bad was going to happen.

New rule: Any movie that features a dog in anyway is not allowed to use Who Let the Dogs Out. Let the fucking song die for god's sake.

I don't think that movies are overusing their soundtrack. But I do believe that film music is getting worse as each new movie comes out. My latest gripe is the shit fest that is Narnia.
Well, shitfest is a bit much, but it could've had much better, much more epic scores.
