Why are they still making fullscreen dvds?

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-25 22:16

So I picked up office space ultra hyper mega edtion today. I get home and I get ready to open it and watch and and I see FULL SCREEN plasted across the top.

I guess it's my own dumbass fault for not looking at the cover but really. VHS should be full screen and DVD should be widescreen, because fullscreen(much like VHS) is an inferior format.

Believe it or not, there are still idiots out there who still prefer fullscreen. They don't grasp the fact that 1/3 of the original picture is being chopped off.

As for VHS being "inferior" - step off. There's a bunch of good shit not available on DVD that's still floating around on VHS. Technically, yes, it's a shitty format, but sometimes ya gotta take what you can get.

There's plenty of abscure, weird shit on VHS that will never make it to DVD, at least officially. You'll always have the guys who transfer rare movies from VHS to DVD and then sell them on eBay for like $30 a pop.

I work at a video store and I get a good 10-15 phone calls aday from people who get home and realize they have wide screen when they wanted full and vice-versa. Just goes to show that most people might be literate, but who the fuck want to read?

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-05 9:57

why can't they just make them all widescreen but zoom+chop for FS as an option?

Better yet, remember when when some DVDs came with full and wide screen? Clearly WB is fucking the consumer by just releasing the movie for $20 and if you want extras that'll be an "extra" $25 to $30. So if your going to fuck us, you may as well include full and wide on the $20 dvd.

And they're all on dialup too, hahaha.

What the fuck is with people complaining about barebone DVDs? Bonus content and anything other than the ORIGINAL VIDEO DATA shown to theaters is a favor to the consumer. If you want bonus content, you will pay the bonus premium. If you want a movie, you buy a movie, not a historical media kit.

I wish people would get this into their heads. They'd better soon, because the market IS moving online, and you won't be getting more than an AVI.

Ignore him, he's an idiot.
I got more complaints regarding companies that don't offer ANYTHING but barebones.
Ever see Hitler's SS? 3 hours and only 5 scene selections, no other options. I didn't smash the movie to pieces in pure rage only because it's Hitler.

Because it's bullshit to pay $20 for just the movie. Why is it I can go to k-mart and buy a dvd with 5 movies on it for $7, but if I want Charlie and the chocolate factory it's going to cost $20, but if I want extras I gotta pay an extra $10.

Now to beat "pirates" they rush it and we gets results like batman begins and Sin city. Then there are some movies where we dont even know if thats it, a year later they might re-release it with extras, or an extended unrated cut. If I wanted "just the movie" I would of bought it on VHS. I dont buy dvds just for the movie, I buy them for the movie and the extras. Isnt that the point of dvd? To hold more content?

I haven't seen that movie, but since it's a documentary I imagine they did this because the movie is just notched at 5 sections, so moving beyond that and fracturing the sections more would be little different than saying "skip ahead 5 minutes."

>> Isnt that the point of dvd? To hold more content?
Yes, more and higher quality video content. That's why you don't see scanlines, ripping, grain, or a square picture.

Maybe I don't understand your angers as well because I watch DVDs like I watch DivX- once for 2 hours. DVD has evolved into the optimal way to fuck the computer in the ass, undeniably, but the issue begins when you expect more for the same. Premium content, premium price- whether it costs them that much or not, they will charge you that much.

If you want to mess up the system and not get fucked over, use your head and ride the 3 year wave. I hear American Psycho uncut is good.

I have the movie too. He means this one. The documentary is cut in exactly 13 minute segments, with the fourth part of each episode running longer than the other three. (where the commercials would have appeared, obviously.)
The cuts in the movie make sense but are really bad. First one is 12 minutes in, then the next is at around 55 minutes in.

AUUUGH. I rented this movie yesterday, it looked pretty good...I vouch as well, what the fuck? You mean to tell me since I exited out to put a screensaver on while I take a shit I have to manually locate my starting place again out of over a HALF HOUR of movie? This is bullshit, it should be only around 15 minutes a segment or one for each scene change. (it's pretty talky, not your typical WW2 movie.)
