Saw this last week, and liked it. Steve Martin can really write.
My complaints:
Steve's voice-overs were unnecessary and pulled you back into the "oh I'm watching a movie in a theater" mindset just as you get into the film. I felt like everything he said was conveyed by the character's actions.
All the nudity was tastefully done except for the first part with Mirabelle laying face down on the bed before Ray comes in. It seemed excessive. Was this Steve's way of being a pervert (I mean fuck, he's the directory) or really necessary to to the film?
The whole thing about Mirabelle being on antidepressants did not feel necessary, especially as it does not come back later in the film. We already know she's single, has a boring job, doesn't do art as much as she'd like, and probably isn't too thrilled with her life. So that part of the plot was already stating the obvious.
Thoughts?
