Considering the movie infrastructure in the Hollywood area, with businesses tailored to costumes, props, set design, special effects, editing, advertising, casting, etc, what hope is there for a thriving independent film community to exist somewhere else in the US? For example, on the east coast, or Sundance, or some place unnatached to stagnant Hollywood civilization?

I live in Boston and we have had an explosion of moviemaking recently thanks to a tax credit we passed in MA. At the moment there are a few dozen productions going on the state that I know of including another movie by Scosese, some crap movie starring Sandra Bullock and so on. On anyone day in boston it is actually normal to see some kind of film production going on.
