Futurama is like high class nerd humor. It's like Popular Science suddenly became hilarious for no reason. The Simpsons is funny in a "people are actually like this" way. Social satire that fits well with the real world. For example, the mob mentality when multiple people decide on something, and lose their individual personalities. The people who go to church just because. The lunch lady, the tavern dwellers, the minimum wage guy, etc etc.

No high level politician has ever condemned Futurama. Therefore it fails.
George Bush Senior, wasn't it? I think he said "American families need to be more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons", or something to that effect. The fact that the Simpsons, as a close-knit, church-going family unit are far more representative of an ideal yet realistic modern family than anachronisms like the Waltons seems to have been lost on him. But then earlier Simpsons concentrated more on the family and their behavior, and not just "let's see how we can humiliate Homer and/or give him a wacky new job/neighbor/hobby this week".

However! It lives symbiotically with Venture Brothers.
I must disagree that Futurama is based only on nerd humor. True, there is probably a good deal more obscure references than in the Simpsons, and I suppose that the sci-fi basis makes it more nerdy, but that's not the basis of the jokes. Some of the humor is, perhaps, less accessible, however. But, really, how much of a nerd or do you have to be to laugh at Zoidberg eating garbage?

The Simpsons, because it is more of a vehicle for social commentary.
Zoidberg cracks me up, though.

Venture Brothers is a bit of an acquired taste, when you realize it's supposed to be bad, that's when you start to enjoy it.
Family Guy is not as good as Futurama in that its reruns suck. The jokes are on par with Futurama, but the survivability means it's inferior.

Family Guy is a more extreme version of The Simpsons. I do prefer it though, the new Simpsons have become much more juvinile.

Family guy was hilarious the first time I saw it but it got old really fast. The simpsons has declined over the years but is still pretty amusing overall.

it's kind of depressing, watching recent simpsons and seeing how hard they're trying to incorporate family guy-style non-sequitur gags into the show. they should euthanize the show already. it's not gonna get any better, and it drags the memory of what was, at its peak, the best cartoon of this generation through the mud.

Family Guy enjoyment is dependent on one's knowledge of and affinity for 70's and 80's pop culture.

True. You have to be a certain age to really "get" a lot of family guy humor. If you aren't, say, 23-30, yo will probably not find the humour in parodies of 80's commercials and Journey songs (the "Don't Stop Believing" karaoke gag in a recent ep was HILARIOUS). Not to say that the show doesn't have a lot of humor outside of the retro stuff, since it has a large teenage following too, but I can't imagine that many teens really understand all of the references. I mean, how many of today's american teenagers have even HEARD of Journey, let alone recognise one of their songs? How many get the Stephen J Canell reference when Peter is ripping the papers out of a typewriter in an episode? I watched Family guy with a teenage nephew recently, and ended up in an old-fogey type lecture about how things were "back in the day" (by the way, if you're younger than your mid-twenties, and you use the phrase "back in the day" referring to a time you expirienced, you are using it illigitamately. You don't remember "back in the day". At your age, you're still in "the day", and have no need to go "back". sorry about this rant, but that's a pet peeve of mine. another is when someone calls SNES or Genesis (or god forbid, playstation) an "old" system. Atari 2600 is an "old system", okay? nothing from the 90's is "old" yet.)

NES just passed 20, Genesis is a little younger. SNES is not old yet.
Yeah, a lot of Family Guy's best material has an age limit. Thankfully I fit well into it. Hell, to the best of my recollection, there have only been two SERIOUS Transformers references (Facts of Life action figures don't count) in the show to date, Optimus Prime = Jewish and the scene flip in The Cleveland-Loretta Quagmire. That shows amazing restraint in the face of an easy HAY WE'RE BEING RETRO COOL cache.

I hooked up my NES to a dedicated tv (13inch) below my real tv, and the only game I have is Tecmobowl. Is that old?

Futurama's humor is deeper though; "So there are an infinite number of parallel universes?" "No, Just the two." "Oh well I guess that's enough."
Or the god thing, though the joke in that episode was kind of badly done.

Both are dumb plus what's the point if you guys are just gonna argue about which is better? >:
I think South Park pwns either one of them but to you that's like saying a hot dog is better with relish than either ketchup or mustard.
Or how about this: Derek Jeter recently achieving a home run on his 3,000th hit doesn't matter to you if he didn't single handedly beat the Red Sox like in 2004 with a face-first dive in the stands, or if you watch basketball and are a Lebron James fan because you hate baseball.
Yeah, it's pointless when talking Futurama vs. Simpsons but still leads to many similar pointless brawls because you can't get over the fact that some people just don't like your opinions. >:
