My laptop just fried and I want to get a desktop. After bills, I only make about $300 a month. This means wait 3 months, get a credit card and use it, or take out a student loan for it.
Any input as to what I should do? I don't *need* it, but it'd save me the time, gas, and trouble of going to the library and doing all of my online homework.

There are local programs to help low income residents purchase old and used computers. If you can afford gas, you can afford a solution.
getting a loan or credit card is a bad idea. just save up and you can build a computer CHEAPPP

you could build a cheap pc for about 150. dont get a loan or credit card if you dont want to be even poorer.

Build one. Unless you're doing hardcore gaming or upload/downloading all you need is core system functions. Use a friends computer to take a binary coding free college course on Coursera their teaching model focuses on the initial system programming and its pretty simple if youve taken calculus. people try to claim binary is hard but its not just make sure you think out every step...it is just ones and zeros after all... Good Luck

Craigslist. Buy anything Celeron or newer. If you install a minimal XP installation or a *buntu distro you should be fine.

look up some local tech companies, write them a begging letter. i am sure they have an old box they will be happy for you to clear out the way.

If you're on a programmers board why don't you write your own software, sell it, make cash and shut up?
Same goes for everyone...eh...never mind.
