I'm currently on a Windows 7 laptop, and I need to access my other Windows XP laptop because I can't transfer my files in it on an external hard drive as a virus is preventing my XP laptop from recognizing usb drives.
How can I enable this? I've tried all the Windows forum help and nothing. I can't even get my Windows 7 to recognize the computer name of the Windows XP laptop so I can access it?
make sure that workgroup name in network of both computers is the same (usually is MShome or WORKGROUP)
in XP you set it like this
contol panel -> system -> computer name -> change
and you have to enable sharing of dik on XP computer
right click on C disk in explorer->prperties->sharing->i understand....->disk sharing-> i understand....-> then you have two options wizzard and just enable file sharing
chose wizzard to set workgroup name and printersharing....
chose just enable file sharing and select folders you want to share

Dude, boot into Linux livecd (I prefer PCLinuxOS) and then plug in your external hard drive then go to the file manager and copy all your shit from the xp partition to your external. Simple.

Seconding this, but I prefer a Gentoo minimal install CD (as I typically have anywhere form one to eight floating around at any given time) or SystemRescueCD
