Tablet or Netbook

Would /tech/ recommend a netbook or tablet for my next tech purchase?
Some facts:
I currently use a custom desktop as my main PC.
I also have an old Dell laptop from 2005 that I use when I absolutely need to use a computer away from my apartment--mostly for vacations and stuff. It isn't so good on battery life and it's not sturdy or light enough for me to carry around all day, so I need something more mobile.
Needs for new device:
-Quick readiness (startup, coming out of standby, etc)
-NO CONTRACT with phone company (if tablet, wifi-only)
-Preferably $300 or under, maybe up to $350
-Primary functions: check e-mail, play media, Skype/equivalent, browse web
Ideas?

is an artificial intelligence that I am trying
to write in Cyrillic Russian on my Acer Aspire One
netbook that runs Windows XP and which toggles back
and forth between English input and Russian input,
so I made the choice of buying a netbook, but if I
had a tablet like the iPad I could write an AI App:

Get a current gen Netbook from Asus. eee pc's are awesome and load linux like a pro. Plus if you decide to upgrade teh ram and hdd to ssd then you will have a wicked fast pc to surf the webs on. bonus points if you load tails via sd card.

Don't change these.
