Programing a game with friends, need advise

Name: Anonymous 2011-12-10 17:08

My freind got a bunch of people together and they are going to try to make a video game. I am one of the few with any experience programing, so I dont have high hopes for the project. On the other hand, It seems like a good way to get people interested in programming.

1) What language should I recommend them learning? The IDE would have to be free, so cant do LOGO.

2) Do you guys know any good tutorials for graphics, the behind the scenes code for games, or just programing in general?

3) Any suggestions on how to coordinate about 25 high school freshmen and get something done in the above project?

(the file is there cause im getting an error saying file not selected without it.)

1. Probably C#/Visual Basic or Python. (There are free LOGO environments, although it's probably not the best language for what you're trying to do.)

2. I've heard "Learn Python the Hard Way" is supposed to be good, although I haven't tried it myself.

3. Use source control and an issue tracker.

C++ + SDL via Lazy Foo's SDL and Code::Blocks

There's a few game engines out there oriented to nooblets, PyGame is the main one, also SDL 1.2 tutorials. Irrlicht is much more powerful, though requires more technical knowledge.

DrRacket can be used, if you look up Chicken, and then look up LISP or Scheme 3d there's some neat sites. Chicken interprets AND compiles if you hook it up to mingw
