I am interested in botnets: what they do, how they are written, how they get on people's systems.
if you know anything please let me know

Rootkits.
IRC.
DDOS.

So you are saying that one would use a Trojan to gain control of a computer, install a Rootkit to hide this from the owner of this computer; at this point the malware would connect to other infected computers most likely using IRC. The network would then be used to perform a DDOS.
