Is this possible?

Shooting a satellite into space, with a generator inside.
It need a small amount of power already in it (or solar panels to collect some) to start the magnet like a top. The magnet would be in a vacuum, and free-floating, so it should never stop, right?

Could we beam that energy back down to earth with microwaves or something?

TL;DR: A generator in space

What Linux distro would you recommend for a complete newbie?

Although there is no friction in the magnets spin, it would require energy to turn against the friction of the generator, so thus the "top" will stop spinning. And even if it is powered by an external source such as solar energy, it would be more efficient to just use solar energy directly.

Don't change these.
