How to hack firmwares and whatnot

Name: shink !tI/0aBkJlU 2011-01-07 22:46

I have a TAO ELECTRONICS digital picture frame, touch screen, with 128 mb of memory. I was looking to change or mod the firmware. Im using Linux Mint, and there are no files on the file system, even in the hidden directories. I was just wondering, where would I begin extracting the firmware, or whatever it runs on?

I was also reading about the .png exploit that executes code when the png is decoded. This picture frame shouldnt have any security against the exploit, so I was thinking about putting a .png on it so when it decodes it, it installs something like damn small linux. Would this be possible?

If either of these are possible, please point me in any direction to get the firmware or how to do the .png firmware

The .png would load a .sh or something similar, then it would mount/flash/install a .img, .sys, .bin, or a .rom if possible. I would most likely need to make my own firmwares, unless i would be able to load a debian or ubuntu shell on the device.

Don't change these.
