CPU trouble?

I just built a computer for the first time. well installed all the components anyways.

When i turn the PSU on the mobo LED lights up,
when i hit the power button, the lights flash on for a split second and then turn off again.
i lurked a little and it seems like its a problem with the CPU, except nothing seems wrong. what problems should i be looking for?

Sure sounds like something is shorting out. Double check all of your connections.

If that doesn't work, take out all components and install them one by one. Eventually you will find a bum component, or maybe it will work fine.

how do i know if a component is shorted out?

You won't be able to tell just by looking at it. Unfortunately you have to go over everything and try things one by one.
