iBook G3 worth saving?

Name: KSerge 2010-03-20 3:23

so a buddy of mine gave me an old iBook G3 of his he's had for years. It's a 600mhz PowerPC version with just the stock 128mb of RAM in it. He gave it to me with a charger, and a battery that hold little to no charge at all.

I took it off his hands assuming I might be able to make it useful somehow, but my initial plan of somehow restoring MacOSX has been scrapped due to trouble and effort involved.

I've thought about putting a PowerPC friendly distro of linux on it, but I have absolutely no linux experience, and most of the linux community seems to have left the PowerPC hardware behind.

tl;dr is this iBook worth saving? Or should trash it somewhere?

G3s are actually pretty nice. Ubuntu has a decent distro going around but its not officially maintained, so Debian is by far the best choice. However, if you have no linux experience, install xubuntu, a low-resource wersion. One of my friends uses SUSE on his Powermac G5 and it is nice, but dunno about the speed on a G3. For any linux you need AT LEAST 256mb. Laptop RAM that old aint on Newegg, but just google and you will find. Grab 1x 256 which should be enough as afaik 64MB is soldered to the mainboard.

Install OS 9 on it! You will love it!
