cpu coolers

i bought a new processor today.

i went from intel 2.2ghz Core2duo to a 3.16 core2duo. only the new cooler won't fit on my main board cause it has a click system instead of screws.

 - can i use the old cooler? it's the same size.
 - can i scrape the coolingpaste off of the new cooler, to use it on the old one?

Guys, I'm running Ubantoo, since I don't know much about linux yet and I heard it was a nice distro to start with, but here's the problem, Compiz effects do not work for some reason or another on one of the three comps I installed it on.
I have googled around and found it has something to do with the ATI Radeon HD 3470 graphic card in it.
Is there a fix anywhere to solve this?

Should I perhaps use some other distro that supports the card, in which case, which distro would be best suited for someone new to the whole linux thing?
