Broken Hard Drive

My laptops hard drive recently failed and Im getting a new one.  Thing is though they want my broken hard drive.

My question is: what the hell are they going to do with it?  Will they try to "fix" it and send it back out to the market for some other consumer to be screwed over?  Or will they dispose of it properly insuring that the enviornment wont be polluted?
