x86 drivers on x64 XP Pro

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-11 15:50

I have XP Pro x64. Problem is, some of my older devices won't work with it because no x64 drivers exist for those devices. I'm broke and can't afford new devices that I hardly use (scanners and such) so I'm hoping there's some way to get the x86 drivers on x64.

Would it work to run a virtual machine or should I plan on dual booting x86?

Thanks.

Some professional advice: WinXP 64 isn't the most effective 64-bit OS imo. There are quite a few issues with it even though the build and third-party drivers have both matured. Application compatibility, namely codecs and utilities that rely upon them work erratically or not at all. As you're noticing, certain manufacturers still lack functional drivers for specific devices as well. I've personally been using WinXP 32 to play games (albeit rarely) for years on an Athlon64 X2. Gentoo AMD64 is my primary desktop OS. I would highly recommend it as an alternative.
However, if you absolutely MUST have 64-bit Windows then I would suggest switching to Vista. I know it's shit advice, but it's the best you've got from Microsoft for x64. Of course you could always follow my example instead of my advice and settle for WinXP 32. It should be more than sufficient.

Don't change these.
