New computer, Old RAID HDD

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-30 17:13

Hi /g/. I'm new to building computers but not upgrading them. My last computer died on me and unfortunately it had a custom made power supply which I can't get a hold of anymore so I decided it was probably time for an upgrade.

Anyway I purchased one hard drive to go with my other 500GB HDD, unfortunately I didn't realised that the 500GB was split into two 250GB and then had some form of RAID to show them as a single HDD.

I want to move my 500GB HDD over to my new computer, it has windows XP on it but I planned to use my newly purchased HDD to put Vista on it. If I put in my two old HDD is there anything bad I should expect to happen?

I'd appreciate any help.

wait, what?  Two partitions on a single drive were RAIDed?  What's the point of that?

More likely that two 250-GB drives were RAID-0ed into a single 500-GB drive, both because that's cheaper (even counting the hardware RAID controller) and because it's faster.

That must be some shitty controller...

RAID controllers are pretty cheap to make. The big ones are expensive because it's a tiny market where the customers tend to have lots of money, not because the quality is really that much better.

Don't change these.
