Crap Computer Lasting Longer Tips?

Right now these are the specs of my crap:

Asus P4S533 Motherboard
2ghz P4
1 Gig of pc2700 ram spread out over 3 slots 512,256,256
256mb Geforce 6800GS

Now would it be worth it to let this computer last a little bit longer if I got some new ram? Going to 2 gig with 1 gig on each stick as this would increase ram efficiency?

The issue I have though is because it's old ram, it's relatively expensive on newegg. Is there a better place to get oldram at cheaper too?  Any other suggestions as to improve the efficiency of my machine to last another year or 2 as I cant really afford a complete overhaul new system as I'm in college and got various other important bills/expenses to take care of.

Oh btw, if it helps the most intensive thing I using on this is TF2, I'm not trying or expecting crysis or running tons of fps at higher than my 1024 resolution. I just want decent enough performance to get another year or so out of the machine to tie me over because of other expenses.

Mom&Pop computer shop, ask to look around the back to see if they have some crappy computer they can't figure out how to make run.
