Which version of VMware do I get to try different operating systems?

If you want to pay, VMware Workstation 6. If you don't, VMware Server.

And then there's always VirtualBbox, Xen and QEMU.

Oh GOD, fail harder.

VMWare is DESIGNED to allow you to 'try different operating systems'. That is the purpose of the product.

And frankly, if all you want to do is try them out, I'd recommend VirtualBox from innotek.org. It's free.

VirtualBox is owned by Sun now, not innotek.
It's moderately crap, but VMware is considerably worse.

Fortunately there are so many better solutions for desktop virtualization out there, amirite?

I use virtualbox, it's still the same as it was with innotek
the only good thing about it is that it is free
I'm posting from a virtual machine right now using a text based interweb browser
it works with all versions of windows and linux
what operating systems are you looking to "try" OP?

The Sun-branded version completely refuses to play nice with USB, and it doesn't properly do screen resolutions anymore, despite the fact that nothing else has changed since I used the innotek one.
I'd suggest people get an older version somewhere if they can.

Everything Sun touches turns to cancer.

Uh I have no problems with resolutions or resizing even in 1.6. If you changed versions, did you also reinstall the tools in the guest?

Haven't tried USB though.
