Torrents - I am a noob.

So, I thought it would be cool to torrent something. But I see all this stuff about people wanting seeds and people who "leech" files, and I don't want to unintentionally be a bitch to all of the internets because I don't know what's going on. So, what does a good torrenter do?

But what does seeding mean? How do you do it?

Seeding: You have a complete version of the file.  You're left connected so other people can download it from you.  There must be at least one seed in the swarm for the torrent to be successful, otherwise everyone will be left at x% completion.

Leeching: You're downloading the file.  Other people are downloading from you.

You want to be kind?  Make sure your share ratio always reaches at least 1, preferably more than 1.

You want to get banned from a few torrent sites?  Always disconnect before your share ratio reaches 1, preferably as soon as you've downloaded the complete.

Watch out if your ISP has "traffic shaping" or a download limit, ecause torrenting can hammer the tubes.

So I just leave the program running and it seeds automatically?

Also in general set the max upload speed in your torrent client to  10kb/s less than your real max upload bandwidth, especially if you have DSL. For example, if your connection can handle 50kb/s upstream, limit your client to 40.

Otherwise your download speeds will suffer and generally everything you try to do, for example web browsing, will be extremely slow. When you're only seeding and not downloading at the same time, you can increase the cap by another 5kb/s.
