Hidden properties in media files?

I torrented a few seasons of a show, and every episode is marked as being avi, yet, they only play audio in WMP and winamp. The only thing they play actually video is in divx. Is it possible to covert these to real avi's or mpegs; I'm trying to get screen caps of them.
