I'm going to be doing a format of my c: drive followed by a full reinstall and update, and I had a question. my main hard drive, is split into a 30 gig (c) and a 130 gig (d) partition. iv been looking for instructions on how to merge these back into one single drive, but I'm coming up empty besides 'use partition magic'. anyone have any advice for me? thanks.

Use parted.
But why would you want to do that? It's a good setup, keep the volatile stuff (Windows, Programs) on one relatively small partition and the data you want to keep on another one.

I agree with >>2 on the use of two partitions. However if you really must combine them, I would suggest GParted's LiveCD for ease of use.

hey a guy at best buy was telling me once that he would run windows and used linux to fix the bugs (viruses freezes etc.) to make a really decent setup. would merging a partiton of windows with linux do that?

Best option is to delete the 2nd partition and resize the first. Merging is very risky.
Also gparted > partition magic.

You don't seem to have any grasp of how partitions work, let alone linux. Stay away from that shit, for you own sake.
