How do you get the username and password to a router without having to reset it to use the defaults?

You don't. That's kind of the point of having a username and password.

there is a ajax shit around that uses javascript to try to bruteforce the router pw. It can take ages, but it is an option.
In some situations, when the router calls home (fonera??) you can make up a scenario to gain root access.
anyway, google your router model for a backdoor (cisco, thank you very much) and or default passwords and if they don't work, forget about tftp and that shit and reset to defaults.
