File Sharing Between Laptop and Desktop

Is there a better way, like a program or something than windowsxp's retarded built in file sharing so I can share and transfer files between my laptop and my desktop over wireless, the laptop connects via wireless the desktop is connected to the router.

I'm a UNIX-head, and I found tar+gzip+ftp to be easier to use than Windows shares.

Sadly, most people just email files to each other, and when the email provider won't swallow massive files, they revert to "sneakernet".
