AMD Opteron PC on NF4 mobo, using IDE HD's, /w 1GB Ram

/w MS Vista Home Ultimate, my secondary IDE HD spins up and down regardless how i set the HD shutdown minuets in lol Advanced Setting in Power Management

my hd will die like much faster with it spinning up/down every like 10 mins...;;;

VISTA = EPIC FAIL

vista has a new defragger that runs all the time in the background unless you disable it.  like many other windows services its supposed to be very useful for basic users since its automated but advanced users will wonder why their computer is acting retarded.

Correct.

Vista's integrated defragmentation routine will automatically attempt to do so any time it thinks there's a lull in system activity.
About the only real way to disable it is to turn off the Service for it.
Start > Run > services.msc

But be VERY careful which ones you disable - Vista is even MORE of a PITA about the services it "requires", and turning off the wrong one can become an instant migraine of epic proportions. =(
