Transcoding Audio

Why is it that when I use VLC to transcode the audio from an avi the audio file comes out almost the same size as the video itself?  It does not seem related to bitrate.   

Try using Virtualdub. File->Save WAV. You can also directly encode the audio to various formats using Virtualdub. Google is your friend.
