Needing to Install a Linux OS

Name: Confuzzled 2007-09-12 13:09 ID:iuCawRMs

Guys, I need to install this Slax OS; good for work and it's only 185mb.

Now, I have to know about 3 things.

1, Will i have to re-install my printer?  It's an Hp psc 1209 all in one.

2, Will, and CAN i still run such windows software as word and powerpoint?  Kinda required here.

And three, Will i need to reformat my External HDs?  They have all my fiules backed up for the reformatting, but can I access those files if they were stored via windows?

Hoping your not a troll.

1. Yes you will need to reinstall your printer.
2. Yes and no. Wine will let you run windows programs but it can be difficult.
3. depends if they are ntfs or fat32 my bet would be they are ntfs and in that case yes you will need to reformat them.

Oh, i'm no troll.

the xhd is fat32, so i guess im safe there?

the printer is ready with the disc, too, so phwew

now, wine.  i herd of openoffice, good too?

my MAIn concern is opening files on windows.  i need to be able to open windows created powerpoints and word docs on my thing and let me edit, print them, or vice versa, make them on linux, edit on windows

can this work?

>My work requires me to install linux and run Word/Powerpoint on it.

>i'm no troll.

Uh huh.

just remember to delete your system32 folder to make your windows print driver work in linux, good to go.

Slax is a LiveCD, not an install.

still possible to install onto hdd.  However if your looking for something simple go for ubuntu, even though i sage myself for suggesting it.

I'm up for a debate.  What makes Linux "so shit"?

The hordes of linux zealots who gloss over any problems it has, the shitty knock off open source clones of other programs, can't play games on it, riddled with hardware driver issues, and now apparantly it melts your computer.

Computer gets really hot under Linux
 in comp text boards lol

If linux was actually any good people would use it. You can't even give it away. Its free, enough people know about it by now, there are even livecds so you don't have to fully install it. Yet hardly anyone bothers. That might tell you something about how shit it is. Can't give it away.

Uhm, yeah, the zealots are asswipes, but they are justified
Open-source knockoffs?!  GIMP came before Photoshop dumbass.
Can't play games? *Ahem* *Points to Cedega and Wine*
Driver issues?  Not as much as Windows.  Most drivers are pre-installed and ready to go.
It doesn't melt the computer, this guy is probably an idiot and screwed something up.

People don't use it because they don't know about it or are lazy.  I can't give it away?  It's free (most of the distro's anyway).

He's assuming that no cost == no worth. This is plain absurd as there are plenty of things in life that cost nothing but are worth plenty.

It was resolved and as I expected, it is another case of a buggy ACPI BIOS. So it's not linux' fault but a hardware manufacturer's. Too bad.

The main reason a lot of people don't try it is because they're intimidated by it. Perhaps not intimidated, but a huge number of people still think of it as a complicated OS full of command line work, which I guess it can be, but it doesn't have to be. Some of the neweer distros can be even simpler than windows at times.

Plus, if it really was useless, we wouldn't be using it. It's a brilliant OS for programming, web work, stability and efficiency, amongst other things. On top of all that, the amount of users who use Linux on the desktop has been rising for a while now, and recently, it's been doing so more quickly than ever.
