Corieoulis (sp?) effect

Is it true that water when poured down the drain will swirl one direction more in the Northern Hemisphere than the Southern?  Not that it'll always swirl the same way in a particular hemisphere but does that location actually affect the chances it'll swirl in a direction?

We can also artificially slow and speed up light.  For example, in a certain gas, light travels faster than it does in a vacuum.  And there are mirroring techniques to slow the speed of light.
