your connection has little to do with it. its the nodes that you are routing through and their speeds. sometimes its fast(well, 50-60kbps), but most of the time its slow as shit(5-10kbps).

The biggest problem with Tor is latency. It sometimes takes around a minute to make a connection. Obviously, if you haven't enabled pipelining, do so.
